IAEA chief to push for deal on Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Raphael Grossi aspires to travel soon to Ukraine and Russia in order to exert pressure with the aim of reaching an agreement on the demilitarization of the area where is the nuclear power plant her Zaporizhia.

Speaking to reporters at the UN headquarters, Grossi claimed that the “real negotiations” with both countries and that he wants to reach an agreement as soon as possible.

Earlier it became known that the power line of one of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant reactors was damaged by shelling, forcing the unit to temporarily run the diesel generators until power was restored (which it eventually was later). The operation of the remaining five reactors was not affected, the IAEA statement said.

The situation at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant “it’s getting worse and we can’t afford to wait until something catastrophic happens”the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency also warned, following Ukraine’s accusations of new shelling by Russian forces in the region.

Grossi said he discussed the matter with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, whom he met this morning on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The factory, which is controlled by Russian forces, has been the target of bombings several times in recent months. Kyiv and Moscow blame each other for these bombings.
