IAEA: Russian Special Forces Send to Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant

Russian authorities have sent specialists to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in eastern Ukraine, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Ukrainian officials have briefed the IAEA on the alleged Russian-controlled nuclear power plant, which is still staffed by Ukrainian personnel, IAEA Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in a statement.

Ukrainian personnel are working “under incredible pressure,” the statement said, citing Ukrainian officials.

Ukraine has said eight representatives of Rosenergoatom, a subsidiary of Russia’s state-owned nuclear power plant Rosatom, have been sent to the plant.

Russian forces occupied the plant on March 4, and Grossi has repeatedly expressed concern about the safety of nuclear power plants in Ukraine during the conflict.

Russian forces had previously occupied the Chernobyl nuclear facility, but withdrew in late March. Following their departure, there were reports that Russian troops may have been exposed to radioactivity in the area. Communication with the Chernobyl nuclear power plant had been cut off for about two months.

Meanwhile, technicians upgraded surveillance systems and gradually restored long-distance data transmission to the situation at the nuclear power plant.

Ukraine currently has four nuclear power plants and 15 plants.
