Ibama orders repatriation of giraffes imported by Bioparque do Rio

Ibama decided that the giraffes imported by Bioparque do Rio, in 2021, must be repatriated to African countries of origin such as Angola and South Africa. The determination was made last Thursday (28), after years of analysis of the case.

3 years ago, Bioparque do Rio imported around 18 giraffes brought by plane from the African continent to a resort in Mangaratiba. Two months later, three animals died while trying to escape the scene in which they were confined. Two years later, a fourth giraffe died from a muscle disease.

Currently, 14 animals live at the resort in Mangaratiba while they await a definition of their future. In addition to ordering the repatriation of the animals, Ibama imposed a fine for mistreatment on the company that manages the Rio de Janeiro zoo. The repatriation does not yet have a date to take place.

When contacted, Bioparque do Rio stated in a statement that the institution complies with all guidelines created by regulatory bodies and has national and international consultancies, “and refutes any allegations of mistreatment, reaffirming once again its commitment to transparency, collaboration with authorities and, above all, the well-being of all animals”.
