Brazil will have a record crop of cereals, legumes and oilseeds in 2022: 261.5 million tons, according to the projection of the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production, released this Thursday (12) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The volume is 2.2% higher than last year.
The new expected level represents an increase of 1% in relation to the projected in March this year.
Although the numbers are positive, researchers point out that the products suffered from adverse climatic effects that reduced the production potential. Among them, a drought in the Center-South of the country, softened in some crops by the return of rains in January.
The phenomenon will have an impact on soybeans. The IBGE projects that the country’s main commodity will have a harvest of 118.5 million tons, a volume 12.2% lower than that achieved in 2021.
In the South, the area most affected by climatic factors, the reduction in the average soybean yield is 46.2% compared to last year.
The three main products, rice, corn and soybeans, add up to 92.2% of the estimated production and correspond to 87.8% of the area to be harvested.
The highlights are the increases of 8.1% in the area of corn and 10.4% in the area of herbaceous cotton, in addition to 4.2% in the area of soybeans. However, rice will lose 2% of cultivated land, and 2.9% of wheat.
Thus, production increases of 27.5% are expected for corn, 11.6% for herbaceous seed cotton and 1.4% for wheat, in addition to a fall of 8.5% for paddy rice.
The estimate of increase in national production occurs after the projection rises in four regions, in relation to 2021: Central-West (11.7%(, Southeast (11.4%), Northeast (9.9%) and North ( 5.2%).
There was a drop only in the South: 14.5%. When the April projections are compared to those of March, there is an increase in the five regions: Southeast (1.7%), North (1.5%), South (1%) and Central-West and Northeast (0.8 %).
