IBGE will appeal the decision to include sexual orientation in the 2022 Census

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) informed this Monday (6th) that it will appeal against the provisional decision of the Federal Court of Acre to include questions about sexual orientation and gender identity in the 2022 Census. and integrates the structure of the Ministry of Economy.

In an official statement, the IBGE claimed that “it will appeal the decision of the Federal Court of Acre on the inclusion in the Census of questions about sexual orientation and gender identity. All questions will be answered in the records”.

In the decision, signed by the judge of the Second Federal Court of Justice of Acre, Herley da Luz Brasil, a request from the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) was granted. The document points out that, among other reasons, the measure is necessary for the formulation of public policies favorable to the country’s LGBTQIA+ population.

According to the injunction, the IBGE has a period of 30 days to communicate to the Judiciary what measures will be taken to adopt the methodology in the demographic census. In addition, the institute may include the fields using the method it deems most appropriate.

The census, last carried out in the country in 2010, will start on August 1st. The consultation is held every ten years and, therefore, should have been held in 2020. However, due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was postponed. In the year 2021, due to budget unavailability, the service also did not happen.
