Ibrahim Kalin on Greek-Turkish: There are some burdens brought to us by geography and imposed on us by history

Despite the improvement in Greek-Turkish relations, the representative of the Turkish president Ibrahim Kalin underlines that there are still “thorns” that may cause rupture again in the future.

Speaking to TV100, Ibrahim Kalin said characteristically… “At the moment we are going through a period of calm. After the earthquake, of course, (the Greeks) showed great understanding. We have always said that we have no intention of getting into such a political dispute with Greece. Our agenda is already clear. We’re busy here.”

“We shouldn’t argue on principle”

He also commented on the fact that we are in the pre-election period, saying that our country is on the road to the elections, while emphasizing that “we should not argue over the principle”.

He then talked about some burdens that… brought by geography such as the islands and the Cyprus issue… “But there are some burdens that geography brought us and history imposed on us. You can’t take a step without dealing with them retrospectively, let’s say, without going through a diplomatic treatment, without solving these problems.

There are some realities imposed on us by geography, there are the islands, there is the narrowness of the geographical area, there are some practices from the past, there is the Cyprus issue. We’re trying to manage this relationship with all of that. Sometimes this turns into a strategic advantage, sometimes it can immediately bring you to breaking point.”
