Experts of the analytical company IC Insights have prepared a forecast related to the global chip market and covering the period from 2021 to 2025.
After a 6% drop in shipments in 2019 and an 8% growth in 2020, IC Insights is forecasting a huge leap forward this year. Shipments are expected to rise by 21%. A total of 391.2 billion microcircuits will be shipped. Historical background: This is 11 times more than 34.1 billion units shipped in 1990.
Chip shipments are expected to grow at a CAGR of 11% from 2020 to 2025. By comparison, between 2015 and 2020, the CAGR was 6%.
It should be noted that a drop in the supply of microcircuits is a rare occurrence. The 2019 downturn was only the fifth time in the history of the industry. Other cases were in 1985, 2001, 2009 and 2012, that is, the fall never lasted two years in a row.
