‘Ice’ from Russia in optimism: ‘Nothing hopeful, no progress in talks with Ukraine’

LAST UPDATE: 16.16

Talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul on Tuesday yielded “no hope” or “progress”, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov said on Wednesday.

“At the moment we can not talk about anything very promising or any progress. There is a lot of work to be done,” Peshkov said, adding that he was pleased that Ukraine had set its terms in writing.

Peshkov said the head of the Russian delegation would brief the press later in the day on Tuesday’s peace talks.

However, the Kremlin spokesman stressed that Crimea is part of Russia and that the Russian Constitution precludes discussing the fate of any Russian province with anyone.

At the same time, the Kremlin spokesman stressed that Moscow wants the substance of what was discussed in Istanbul not to be made public.

Ukrainian negotiator expresses optimism after talks with Russia

Ukrainian negotiator Mikhail Pontolyak later said he was optimistic after talks with Russia in which Moscow said it would reduce military operations near Kyiv and Chernihiv, Reuters reported.

“I have an optimistic impression from the round of negotiations in Istanbul,” Pontoliak said.

He said the proposed system of security guarantees for Ukraine, which would be offered in exchange for its neutrality, would be put to a national referendum only after Russian troops withdrew from their positions before the invasion of Ukraine.
