Iconic portraits of England’s queens will be on display to mark the Jubilee

Portraits of queens who have ruled Britain over the centuries will be part of a month-long program that will bring together exhibitions, events and auctions in London. All to celebrate the platinum jubilee of the queen Elizabeth IIwhich will be held in June.

The iconic Armada portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, which commemorates the failed invasion of England by the Spanish Armada in 1588, was borrowed from the Woburn Abbey collection and will lead the show alongside Andy Warhol’s “Reigning Queens” portrait, taken in 1985. Warhol is a richly colored reinterpretation of the official photographic portrait taken in the Queen’s Silver Jubilee year.

The exhibition, which runs from May 28 to June 15, will also feature portraits of Mary the Queen of Scots, Queen Victoria, Queen Anne, Mary I and Mary II, all on loan from aristocratic collections.

Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations represent a historic cultural moment that marks her 70 years on the throne.

In addition to displaying royal portraits, Sotheby’s will exhibit rare and aristocratic jewelry and tiaras, as well as books and manuscripts of kings and queens.

As part of the program of events, there will also be lectures, debates and musical and dramatic performances focusing on themes of arts and creativity, history and youth and the future.

A sale described by the auction house as showcasing the “best of British art” will take place. “British Art: The Jubilee Auction” will be held on June 29 and will include new works by the Queen donated by Chris Levine.
