Iconic topless victory in Germany: The case that changed the rules

When a lifeguard asked the police to deport Lotte Mies for swimming topless in an indoor pool in Berlin, it was a move that would inadvertently trigger a rule change that would allow all women, including visitors, the freedom to go topless while they were swimming in the city. The decision to change the dress code for swimming in the German capital came after two women, including Mies, filed complaints that they had been kicked out or banned from the city’s swimming pools for refusing to cover up and demanding the same rights as men when they bathe “oben-ohne” (topless) in the city’s public pools. Mies, 33, a Berlin resident, filed a discrimination complaint last December against an indoor public pool in Kaulsdorf after she was banned from going topless.
