In two decades, internet access has increased in Brazil: only 13% of homes in urban areas in the country had access to the internet in 2005, a contrast to the proportion recorded in 2024, of 85%. This means that for every eight households, seven have access to the internet.
The data was revealed by the TIC Households survey, launched this Thursday (31), which turns 20 years old. The surveys are carried out by the Regional Center for Studies for the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br).
Urban environment
In 2005, 24% of inhabitants of urban areas were users of the network, in 2024, the percentage reached 86%, indicating that 141 million people connected to the digital environment in the three months prior to the study.
“The way people access the Internet has also changed markedly: in 2008, users connected to the network more in internet cafes or ‘Internet cafes’ than in their homes, and this access was done via a computer. Currently, almost everyone connects from their homes and from a smartphone”, analyzes Alexandre Barbosa, manager of Cetic.br|NIC.br.
Inequalities
Despite the advances identified by the historical research series, there are still marked inequalities. The Internet, for example, is present in 100% of class A homes, but in 68% of class D and E homes.
In urban areas, 85% of homes are connected, while in rural areas, the proportion is 74%.
The research also reveals inequality in relation to the quality of this access. According to a significant connectivity indicator created by Cetic.br – which includes factors such as connection cost and speed, presence of fixed broadband in homes and access via multiple devices, among others –, only 22% of individuals aged 10 or over in Brazil have satisfactory connectivity conditions.
