IDC says global software-defined infrastructure software revenues in the first half of the year were $ 6.5 billion.

According to the estimates of experts of the analytical company IDC, the global software-defined infrastructure (SDI) software market reached $ 6.5 billion in the first half of 2021. This is 10.7% more than in the same period in 2020. Analysts identify three technology pillars that make up the SDI market: software-defined computing software (54% of the market), software-defined storage controller software (35%), and software-defined networking software (10%).

IDC says global software-defined infrastructure software revenues in the first half of the year were $ 6.5 billion.

“After a challenging 2020, when the results were affected by severe business uncertainty, at least by historical performance standards, the SDI market fared much better in the first half of this year,” said Greg Macatee, senior analyst at IDC. “We have seen an acceleration in the development of the SDI market as enterprises have begun to return to more normal IT spending patterns and invest in software-defined technologies to transform and modernize their data centers.”

SDI analysts mean “logically combined resources of computation, memory, storage and networking, which are managed by software with minimal human intervention.” SDI systems are independent of the underlying hardware as long as it meets certain specifications. The underlying hardware in SDI systems are commercial off-the-shelf products (COTS) with enterprise grade certifications. Note that the complete SDI solution includes software and hardware, but in this case, IDC only considered software costs.
