Idris Elba: “I’m the one the bouncers didn’t let in”

This article is published in number 13 of Vanity Fair on newsstands until March 29, 2022

A cold December night, Idris Elba saved the night of a group of young people who had been denied entry to a London nightclub. Elba, who happened to pass by the place where he and his friends are regulars, convinced the manager to let them in, even offering to get him a table. The episode went viral on TikTok. Elba laughs, thinking about it. “I liked that guy because I saw myself in him,” she says. “Rejected only because it is slightly larger and does not correspond to the club’s ideal client.”

It is difficult to imagine anyone denying entry to the nightclub in Elba, which has become one world superstar thanks to talent and charisma. But it took a lot of work to get here, and now that the actor is about to celebrate his 50th birthday in September, it seems his only interest is to continue surprising. The refusal to be labeled allowed him both to work in almost any major franchise of Hollywood Avengers, Fast & Furious, The Suicide Squad – Suicide Mission – and to play more character-centered roles as in The Wire, Beasts of No Nation And Mandela – The long road to freedom. At the time of the interview, he is in London shooting the first Netflix film Luther, based on the hit TV series for which he has garnered 4 Emmy nominations since taking on the role of the haunted detective in 2010. A film version has always been at the top of his wish list. “For those who love to explore the dark side of human beings it’s interesting, it’s well written,” he says.

He will soon appear in two very different films: George Miller’s fantasy Three Thousand Years of Longingwith Tilda SwintonAnd Beast, a survival thriller in which he plays a father chased by a lion. As if that were not enough, he will voice Knuckles, the new opponent of the blue hedgehog in Sonic – The Movie 2, due out in April, part that earned him points with his seven-year-old son. “He is growing up and is happy to hear his father in these animated films.” Even in cartoon form the actor does not lose charm: in the first trailer, the media said that Knuckles had become sexy thanks to the baritone voice of Elba. “I don’t know, guys. I just don’t notice it when I listen to it again ».

Instead that voice is opening the way to a second job: Elba also does the dj and collaborates with the likes of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ei Friendly Lime, an Australian indie-pop group. There music it is much more than a hobby for the actor, who has also performed at the Coachella 2019, is a passion that he hopes audiences will take seriously: “The problem with music is that it is a process that consumes you,” he says. “It’s very difficult to shoot a movie and then walk into a recording studio. It’s like trying to make a souffle while pulling yourself up on a brick wall. ‘

Idris Elba is also looking to follow the production house Green Door Pictureswhich he founded in 2013. The aim is to support new talent, opening the door to those who may need him, perhaps to overcome the barrier of the Hollywood bouncers.
