The director general of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, said this Wednesday (20) that the world is experiencing three distinct crises at the same time: the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, a global energy crisis and a climate crisis. . During the entity’s event, he commented on the work of the IEA to help support the framework in the energy sector.
The official pointed out that “we have seen very high prices for oil, natural gas and electricity in Europe, but also in other parts of the world.”
In relation to oil, he recalled the effort of the members of the IEA to release strategic stocks on two occasions in order to contain prices.
Birol attended the launch event of an IEA report on Belgium’s work in the sector.
He praised the country’s improvements in clean energy, but the organization noted that Belgium needed to move forward on this front to meet the EU’s “ambitious” targets by 2050.
