If an operator calls you, don’t get caught: scammers have a new sophisticated scheme

Phone scammers are constantly coming up with sophisticated schemes, and one of the newest has been pretending to be an employee of the operator. Back in April, such cases were isolated, but since then they have become massive and number in the hundreds every week. This is reported by Izvestia, citing sources close to the two operators.

According to the new scheme, scammers pose as employees of cellular companies and call victims under various fictitious reasons: they offer to change the tariff plan, take advantage of discounts, and so on. The purpose of such calls is the same – to gain access to the subscriber’s account, for this, the attackers need an SMS code that comes when they enter their personal account.

Having obtained a subscriber’s account, scammers set up call or SMS forwarding from the number, after which they use it to obtain identification codes from various services (including banking ones – they can even apply for a loan).

However, there is another, more popular format: during the conversation, cybercriminals themselves force a person to activate call forwarding, for this the victim only needs to dial a special code and a number to which the call will be forwarded.
