If “Grey’s Anatomy” ended with the 17th season

“I’m working on a season finale that can also work as a series finale. It is not easy and it is not exactly what I would like to do ». It was enough for showrunner Krista Vernoff to shareHollywood Reporter this doubt to unleash the uproar: the last season of Grey’s Anatomy will it really be the last? The news has been around for some time, but today it could be truer than yesterday for two reasons: Ellen Pompeo’s contract, which is currently the highest for a prime-time series actress, and the pandemic, which is making the filming of this last season is particularly difficult to manage (the second part of the series will start, in fact, on Thursday 11 March on ABC).

“I asked the production for news about the future of the series before the end of this one: I need to know if it will be the last because I foresee some changes for some characters, but I have to know what will happen to adapt its fate. I have ideas in both cases, but it’s one thing to write a definitive closure for the characters, quite another to write something that allows me a minimum of cliffhanger and ‘gas’ for next season. I’m trying to work on both scenarios, ”added Vernoff, who is also supervising Station 19, the spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy, and in Rebel, the first series of her own which will land on ABC in April. Vernoff therefore asks the network for certainties to try to guarantee a worthy ending for all the spectators who have been following with passion for almost twenty years. Grey’s Anatomy, which continues to remain one of ABC’s flagship products, very popular in the 18-49 age group and among the most viewed titles on Netflix which, thanks to a millionaire agreement, has obtained the rights to broadcast it in streaming in the United States.

Despite this, the future of the series continues to be uncertain. Second Deadline, an eighteenth season would still be a way forward for ABC, a way to close the series in a less hasty way than it would be in these conditions, with the pandemic that forced production to stop for a very long period. The public, however, continues to have reservations: the doubt of not seeing Meredith Gray and the other members of Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital after the finale of the seventeenth season is getting stronger and no one can currently reassure them that it will not be so.
