In the United States, decades before the eternal all-Italian quarrel between blondes and brunettes of the “Baudassic” era at the Ariston, there were platinum Marilyn Monroe and cotonata Jackie Kennedy. Two women at the antipodes, from the tip of the head to that of the feet, in short, and with a wardrobe decidedly at opposite poles. Both consigned to history for their wonderful evergreen looks, style icons and symbols of two distant ways of being a woman. Over the years they have been honored by stars of every latitude and longitude, we know. But, perhaps, never on the occasion of the same event. Until yesterday, however, when al Met Gala we were dazzled by Kim Kardashian in version Happy Birthday Mr. President, wrapped in the (original) Jean Louis mermaid dress adorned with 6,000 crystals worn on the most famous of John Kennedy’s birthdays.
But, as we said, if Kim channeled Marilyn there are those who literally wore the shoes of her historical rival Jackie. A style match played all in the family since it was Kris Jenner, the mother of the most famous heiress on the web, to become the most fashionable First Lady of America. The matriarch went to the Metropolitan Museum in New York with un one-shoulder canary yellow dress by Oscar de La Rentawith a sequin hem, paired with white gloves and a shiny clutch, practically twinned with Valentino’s draped mint green one which Mrs. Kennedy first wore in 1967 to a dinner in her honor at the Chamcar Mon Palace in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
A dress that has gone down in history, also flaunted by Marie-Chantal of Greece right at the 2001 Met Gala, since that year’s theme was Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years. For the occasion, the royal walked under the flashes with the original garment completed by the best accessory: Valentino Garavani himself.
