Former Brazilian ambassador to Washington Rubens Barbosa warned about a possible dilemma faced by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva regarding Venezuela’s entry into the Brics group.
The statement was made during an interview with WW this Monday (21), where Barbosa analyzed the implications of this decision for Brazilian foreign policy.
According to the diplomat, Lula finds himself in a delicate position, considering that he has already demonstrated a certain acceptance of the political situation in Venezuela, despite international criticism about democracy and human rights in the country.
“Lula is in a dilemma, because he, in a certain way, accepted what happened in Venezuela in terms of democracy and human rights,” said Barbosa.
Pressure for membership and consequences of veto
The former ambassador highlighted that there is significant pressure for Venezuela’s inclusion in the BRICS bloc. However, he warned that a possible Brazilian veto on the neighboring country’s entry could have serious diplomatic consequences.
“If Brazil vetoes Venezuela, all the work that has been done so far to keep channels open, fluid communications between Brazil and Venezuela will be interrupted,” he explained.
Barbosa was emphatic in stating that a Brazilian veto would be interpreted by the Venezuelan government as a rupture in bilateral relations.
“Venezuela will take this as a rupture on Brazil’s part,” warned the diplomat, highlighting the complexity of the situation for Brazilian foreign policy.
The former ambassador characterized the situation as a “trap” for President Lula and Brazilian foreign policy.
The decision on Venezuela’s entry into the Brics puts Brazil in a delicate position, having to balance its regional relations with the expectations of the other members of the group.
