If monkeypox goes unchecked, we’ll need a vaccine, says expert

The vice president of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations (SBIm) Isabella Ballalai said, in an interview with CNN that “if we do not control outbreak [da varíola dos macacos], we will have to vaccinate en masse”. Brazil recorded its first death on Friday (29).

The death of a 41-year-old man, hospitalized in Belo Horizonte (MG), was confirmed by the Ministry of Health this Friday (29).

The expert also pointed out that, for now, there will not be a mass immunization, only the public at risk. Transmission occurs largely in sexual relations, especially between men, and in a respiratory way, “but not [na tamanha proporção] and capacity like measles or Covid-19”.

In a press conference this Friday afternoon (29), the secretary of Health Surveillance of the Ministry of Health, Arnaldo Medeiros, said that the first shipment of vaccines against monkeypox acquired by Brazil should be delivered in September.
