If we contain deforestation, we will reach the target before 2030, says ambassador to CNN

In an interview with CNN, Ambassador Paulino Franco de Carvalho Neto, secretary for Multilateral Political Affairs at the Itamaraty, said that the goals announced by Brazil at COP26 will require a great effort on the part of the federal government.

Even so, he said he believes it will be possible to reduce 50% of the emission of greenhouse gases even before 2030, the year announced as a goal at the United Nations (UN) climate conference.

“We made a very important and ambitious announcement, which is to increase our percentage of reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. We went from 43% to 50%, based on the year 2005. In other words, in 2030, we will have to issue half of what we issued in 2005,” said Carvalho.

According to the ambassador, the challenge is global, and not exclusive to Brazil. The country, he said, “is at the forefront” of environmental efforts even though it is not a developed nation.

Carvalho classified deforestation as the “great challenge” for Brazil to meet the goals announced at COP26. “It is a problem that we have to face and, if we face it successfully and contain deforestation, we will certainly reach this goal even with some slack”, he said.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) began on Sunday (31) in Glasgow, Scotland. President Jair Bolsonaro (non-party) did not attend the event. Today, the Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, spoke to world leaders about the country’s environmental goals, considered more daring than those initially considered.

Initially, the government’s proposal was to present a reduction of between 45% and 48% of emissions by the end of the decade, as anticipated by CNN’s international affairs analyst, Lourival Sant’Anna, on Sunday (31).

There was also the expectation that Brazil would not sign any decision related to the neutralization of carbon emissions until the middle of the century, but the country’s commitment to neutralize carbon emissions by 2050 was announced.
