II International Expo: 1st day is marked by dialogues on black literature

Maria Firmina dos Reis, Conceição Evaristo, Luís Gama, Carolina Maria de Jesus, Machado de Assis and other black Brazilian writers were cited throughout the first day of the II Expo Internacional Consciência Negra. Flávio Gomes, historian and professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ, and Lília Schwarcz, historian and professor at the Department of Anthropology at USP, spoke together about the organization of the Dictionary of Slavery and Freedom (2018).

Flávio spoke about the educational myths surrounding Afro-Brazilian culture being linked to the idea of ​​little information and knowledge about history. “Actually, the textbooks do not deal with this, because they have no interest in dealing with it. Sometimes a myth arises that there is no information, when in fact there is a lot of research available. With didactic material reaching teachers, this will be a support for educators to take this information that is already available to schools”, criticizes.

In 1978, a group of young black men and women who produced literature gathered at CECAN – Centro de Cultura e Arte Negra, in São Paulo, to create a publication in which they could exhibit their art. The organization was one of the first black entities to work on the idea of ​​blackness and was the subject of debates on structural racism in the programming of the II Expo.

During the chat ‘Black writing and life: what knee is this that suffocates them so much?’ Cuti, alongside Míriam Alves and Tom Farias, stated that “racism prevents us from talking about it. The racist does not listen, he has ready answers”. Cuti, Luiz Silva’s pseudonym, is a poet, fiction writer, playwright and essayist, in addition to being considered one of the most important contemporary black intellectuals.

Míriam Alves recalled her debut in Cadernos Negros in 1982 and her opening sentence, “I started crying, now I scream words and tears, the sobs and the needles of oppression that pierce my black skin deeply.”. Míriam is a poet and novelist, she started writing as a child. In the 1980s, he joined the Quilombhoje Literatura collective. The importance of rescuing the stories of black women was highlighted at various times.

In addition to Flávio Gomes, Lília Schwarcz, Cuti and Míriam Alves, Bianca Santana, Jeruse Romão, Paulo Lins, Geovane Martins and Paulina Chiziane also spoke.
