A joint action by the Federal Police, IBAMA and the Military Environmental Police combatted, on the morning of this Tuesday (8), the illegal extraction of gold in the Pomba River, in Cataguases (MG).
During the operation, the agents set fire to a dredger that was on the banks of the Pomba River and was intended for illegal gold extraction.
According to investigations, the suspects carried out mineral extraction in the bed of the Pomba River, without authorization from the National Mining Agency and without an environmental license.
According to the PF, an expert opinion was requested to assess the environmental damage caused by the illegal activity. Those investigated will be responsible for the crimes of usurpation of the Union’s public property and environmental damage, for which penalties can reach up to six years in prison.
