A ticket in Illinois took the second-largest Mega Millions jackpot of about $1.28 billion during the Friday night draw, according to a local lottery.
The winning numbers were 13, 36, 45, 57, 67 and a Mega Ball of 14. The night’s prize money was estimated at $747.2 million. The next draw will be Tuesday.
To date, information on the lottery winner or in which region of Illinois the winning ticket was sold has not yet been made available.
The prize pool has been steadily increasing for at least the last few weeks as no ticket has matched all six winning numbers – which is difficult. The odds of winning are 1 in 302,575,350.
So far, the biggest Mega Millions jackpot was $1.53 billion, won by a single ticket sold in South Carolina in 2018. This week’s result was the world’s biggest lottery prize won by just one ticket, from according to Mega Millions.
The biggest jackpot of any US lottery game was $1.58 billion – from Powerball on January 13, 2016, shared by winners in California, Florida and Tennessee.
The Mega Millions website on Friday night was inaccessible for several minutes after the draw. Lottery prizes start at $20 million and grow based on game sales and interest rates, according to its website.
Lottery tickets are sold in 45 US states and take place on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11pm.
