The Justice Department said it decided to reduce the charge for Lichtenstein because he cooperated with the investigation and assisted in other investigations, in particular, testifying against the operator of the cryptocurrency mixer Bitcoin Fog earlier this year.
His wife and accomplice Heather Morgan’s sentence will be shorter because Liechtenstein was primarily responsible for the Bitfinex hack, prosecutors say.
According to the case materials, Liechtenstein agreed to transfer funds in several cryptocurrencies totaling more than $6 billion to the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange as damages.
Let us recall that Ilya Likhtenstein was arrested in February 2022, and in August 2023 he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to illegally obtain funds from the Bitfinex exchange.
