Waiting for authorization to cross the Rafah crossing and return to Brazil, trader Hasan Rabee says he has mixed feelings. He will be able to leave the Gaza Strip with his wife and two daughters, but will leave his mother and two sisters amid the conflict and the escalating humanitarian crisis.
“I’m happy, but at the same time I’m sad. Our family was not placed,” Rabee told CNN who hopes that relatives can travel to Brazil on a possible second list.
On October 26, Rabee spoke via video with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). At the time, she asked that the three women in the family could also travel to Brazil. The information that Lula promised help to remove non-Brazilian citizen family members from Gaza was confirmed by sources at the Palácio do Planalto.
On social media, Rabee posted a video saying goodbye to his family. “The hardest thing in my life was to leave my mother and two sisters and travel. They are without living conditions. I hope this second list of family members comes out as President Lula promised”, wrote Rabee.
According to the CNN , the inclusion of relatives of Brazilians depends on diplomatic negotiation and document regulation. Diplomatic sources say that the rescue operation for the 34 Brazilians and family members whose names are already on the list of foreigners to leave Gaza is now being concluded.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, stated this Friday (10) that Israeli authorities assured him that the group of people who asked the Brazilian government for repatriation will leave the Gaza Strip as soon as the Rafah border reopens to the passage of foreigners.
On Thursday (9), Brazilians were included for the first time on the list of foreigners who were expected to leave the Gaza Strip this Friday. However, the Rafah border was temporarily closed at around 11 am (Brasília time) after an incident on the line that separates the north and south of Israel.
