Images released by the government of Mato Grosso do Sul show the extent of the damage caused by fires in the Pantanal in recent weeks. The state government declared a state of emergency for 180 days due to the incidents.

In the first months of 2024, the number of fires in the biome had reached 1,026, according to the National Institute for Special Research (Inpe). Compared to the same period last year, there was a 980% increase in the number of fires.

Last Thursday (27), the Federal Police created a crisis office to manage the situation in the Pantanal. The office will operate in the municipality of Ladário (MS), where there is a Navy base. The city is 425 kilometers from the capital Campo Grande and close to the border with Bolivia.

Also on Thursday, the PF reported that it had begun investigating possible human responsibility for the fires.

This Friday (28), a Brazilian Air Force (FAB) aircraft began its first firefighting mission in the Pantanal. The Navy and the National Force are also operating in the biome.
