Imamoglou detention and arrests of journalists: Turkey in political turmoil

The Turkish authorities arrested nine journalists who covered yesterday’s night demonstrations in many cities against the detention of Constantinople Mayor Errem Imamoglu, according to the Turkish journalists’ Association. It is not clear at present why the journalists were arrested. A Turkish court preserved yesterday, Sunday, the Mayor of Constantinople Imamoglou, the main political opponent of President Tayyip Erdogan, awaiting trial for corruption charges, a move that has sparked the biggest demonstrations in the country at least in the country. Despite the bans of outdoor rallies in many cities, mainly peaceful anti -government demonstrations took place for a fifth night on Sunday. The largest opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), is calling for demonstrations against the court’s ruling on Imamoglou, which characterizes political and undemocratic.
