Immigration and gender equality guide Summit of the Americas this Tuesday (7)

The second day of the “Summit of the Americas”, this Tuesday (7), will debate topics such as digital transformation, improving the integration of migrants from the Americas and gender equality and democracy in the 21st century. At the top of the agenda of the United States, the country that hosts the event, are democracy and the environment.

The congress, scheduled to last until the 10th, is held in Los Angeles and aims to discuss shared political issues, affirm common values and generate commitment to actions to face challenges present in the countries of the Americas.

In the first period of this Tuesday’s meeting, the digital will be in evidence with the discussion: “Digital Transformation: human rights and the internet”. Then, “Improving the integration of migrants in the Americas” comes on the agenda, followed by the roundtable discussion “Gender Equality and Democracy in the 21st Century”

In the last edition of the meeting, in 2018, the then President of the United States, Donald Trump, sent the vice president to attend the meeting and limited himself to looking at the Americas and seeing an immigration problem. Now, current President Joe Biden wants to reaffirm the importance of the region to the US government.

The five pillars of discussions established by the US this year are: Health and Resilience in the Americas, Green Future, Accelerating the Transition to Clean Energy, Digital Transformation and Democratic Governance.

The President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), is expected to travel to California to attend the summit and meet with Joe Biden between June 6th and 10th.

This is the most important meeting of the Summit, considering that Brazil is the largest country in the region and also considering the difficult relations between the two presidents. Bolsonaro’s gesture in deciding to go is already a positive gesture from Joe Biden’s point of view, evaluates the analyst of Internacional da CNN Lourival Sant’Anna.

In the economic sphere, experts consulted by the CNN say they expect an event with some signs and speeches, but few practical advances in trade relations between the countries.
