Imperatriz Leopoldinense is the great champion of the special group of Carnival 2023 in Rio de Janeiro, having paraded with the story of Lampião as a theme. Império Serrano was relegated to Série Ouro.
This is the first title in 22 years for Imperatriz, who returned to the special group in the last Carnival. It is the ninth time they have received the trophy.
In all, 36 judges evaluated the associations that paraded from the nights of Sunday (19) and Monday (20). The reading of the notes took place at the Sambódromo da Marquês de Sapucaí — this year, only the smallest note was discarded.
The order of the disclosed questions was as follows: Harmony; Plot; Battery; Allegories and props; Costumes; Samba-Enredo; Front commission; Master Sala and Flag Bearer; Evolution.
The parade of champions will take place next Saturday night (25), with the six schools that had the best placement. The start is scheduled for 21:30, and there are still some chairs available for sale.
Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel received a fine of BRL 60,000 for passing the time of withdrawal in the dispersal.
All schools complied with the allotted time and other obligations, without being penalized.
calculation
Right at the beginning of the calculation, Grande Rio, Mangueira and Imperatriz Leopoldinense were out of line as favorites, achieving the maximum marks in the first items announced.
In a historic parade, Imperatriz Leopoldinense dressed as a cangaceira and took the story of Lampião to the avenue. The Queen of Ramos, as she is known in the North zone of Rio de Janeiro, sang “The goat’s grip that the excommunicated man treated with malice and the Blessed One did not give shelter”.
With the samba plot created to tell the story of singer Zeca Pagodinho, Grande Rio got good starting marks. The school crossed Sapucaí with the theme: “Hey Zeca, where is the pagoda? I walked barefoot, cart and train, looking for Xerém, to see you, to hug you, to drink and drum”.
Mangueira took a trip to African ancestry and honored the Carnival of Bahia by closing the first day of parades. Personified in Queen Alcione, black women were highlighted on the avenue.
Some schools had problems. Shortly before entering the avenue, one of the modules of the Beija Flor wing car caught fire and scared the school members. Unidos da Tijuca also had problems, one of the cars, which displayed the Farol da Barra, had the monument overturned and paraded with the damage on the avenue.
Nine questions were judged in the new regulation established by the Independent League of Samba Schools, Liesa. Announcer Jorge Perlingeiro, president of Liesa, read the investigation script and the notes, as usual.
Instead of five, this year there were four jurors for each item. As a result, the total scores dropped from 540 to 432 in total, or 36 for each samba school. As a result, there was the expectation of a faster assessment than in previous years.
Another rule that changed was the disposal of banknotes. Previously, the highest and lowest scores for each item were discarded for each school. Now only the smallest note has been discarded.
All the transport of banknotes and official documents that buoyed the calculation was done by an armored car.
The reading of the questions obeyed the order drawn by Liesa in the early afternoon of this Wednesday (22), starting with harmony, plot, drums, allegory and props, costume, samba plot, front commission, master room and flag bearer and evolution, the latter being the first tiebreaker between schools.
“Evolution” would be the first item for the tiebreaker, if necessary.
