With 2020 being essentially the year of the resumption of the cruise industry, after the abrupt cessation brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, the numbers show that the cruise, in terms of the port of Thessaloniki, is recovering compared to 2019 and grows in big steps.
According to data published by the Hellenic Ports Association, while in 2019 6 cruise ships arrived in Thessaloniki carrying 4,865 passengers, in 2021, 17 cruise ships carrying 11,777 passengers docked. In the year of restrictions, in 2020, only one cruise ship with 28 passengers arrived in the city.
These data show a doubling of passengers in the port of Thessaloniki, which saw passengers increase by 142% between 2019 and 2021, which contributed to the OLTH rising from 26th place in the number of passengers in 2019, to 14th in 2021.
At the same time, arrivals almost tripled from 6 in 2019 to 17 in 2021, which led to an increase in the relative ranking of OLTH in the number of arrivals from 36th in 2019, to 18th in 2021.
All this at a time when according to the data announced by the Hellenic Ports Association, the total number of cruises in the country rose to 1957 in 2021, with 1,316,662 passengers and to 3,979 in 2019, with 5,552,384 passengers.
