Improvement in the job market is due to high informality, says economist

In an interview with CNN Bruno Imaizumi, economist at LCA Consultores, evaluated that the recovery of the labor market, announced this Friday (30) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), was mainly due to the creation of informal jobs in the quarter ended in August .

“It is a very positive moment for the job market, in recovery that has been happening since the second half of 2021 due to informality. No wonder the number of informal workers is at a record level in the country this quarter, but the latest surveys show a recovery in occupation, also in formal positions,” said Imaizumi.

The reading is based on the latest employment data published in the Pnad Contínua (Continuous National Household Sample Survey). The unemployment rate, according to the survey, was 8.9% in the quarter that ended last August.

The informality rate was 39.7% of the employed population, against 40.1% in the previous quarter and 40.6% in the same quarter of 2021. Despite having dropped 0.4 percentage point, the contingent of informal workers is still close to the record, with 39.3 million workers without official registration.

The economist also assessed that, although the job market is in continuous recovery, the same movement is not seen in income, which is affected by inflation.
