At least 117 people were killed in the central part of Nigeria after severe floods destroyed houses, an emergency management official said today after detecting more corpses. Heavy rainfall in the Mokaa area, in the western part of Nigeria, caused extensive floods that dragged houses with the families living in them. Workshops of the State Emergency Management Service (SEMA) and volunteers are continuing investigations to identify trapped. In the past few days, the Nigerian Meteorological Service (Nimet) had warned of the risk of heavy rainfall in 15 of the country’s 36 states. Flooding phenomena are often in Nigeria during the rainy season, from May to September. In 2024 more than 1,200 people died and 1.2 million inhabitants were forced to leave their homes due to floods in Nigeria, the worst in the country for decades. Source: RES
