In 2021, 50 million people lived in ‘modern slavery’, says report

A study by the International Labor Organization (ILO) found that 50 million people were living in so-called “modern slavery” in 2021.

The survey was carried out in partnership with the International Organization for Migration and the human rights organization Walk Free.

THE CNN Radio Claudia Falcão, who is the coordinator of the ILO’s Program on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work in Brazil, stated that “it is unacceptable that today we have working conditions considered analogous to slavery.”

According to her, the study is “an important warning”.

“The report indicates that we are behind schedule with global commitments against slavery, it is the moment where we have to focus and act urgently.”

Modern slavery, as Claudia Falcao explains it, is a term that encompasses forced labor and forced marriage.

The survey estimates show that, among the victims, 28 million performed forced labor, of which 3.3 million were children.

The expert points out that the complaint mechanism is very important to reach people in this situation.

“It takes the support of society to get there, especially with regard to domestic work, people need to know what the concept of forced labor is.”

In Brazil, slave labor is a crime and is one in which the person is subjected to debt bondage, forced labor, exhausting working hours or degrading conditions.

Claudia also said that the country “was and continues to be an international reference in the fight against slave labor.”

Even so, she points out that the country is subject to the situation.

From 1995 to 2021, 57,000 people were rescued from slave-like labor.
