In 4 days, it could rain more than twice as much as expected for the entire month in RS, says Climatempo

While several municipalities deal with the consequences of the historic flood that hit Rio Grande do Sul, the weather forecast indicates that by Monday (13) it could rain twice as much as the average for the month of May in a large part of the state, according to Climatempo.

The historical series from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) shows that in the month of May the average rainfall in the state of Rio Grande do Sul is 140 to 180 millimeters. On the south coast, the average is between 100 and 140 millimeters.

From this Friday (10) until Monday (13), however, Climatempo's forecast is that some regions will accumulate up to 330 millimeters of rain.

According to the meteorology institute, the most affected region should be the Serra Gaúcha — where rivers originate that flow to the Jacuí and Taquari Valleys and were heavily hit by the storms of the last few days.

The municipality of Caxias do Sul, which is among the 431 municipalities affected by last week's storms, accumulated around 450 millimeters of rain in the first eight days of May. Until Monday (13), Climatempo predicts that it will rain approximately 300 millimeters.

According to data from the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul, at least five deaths have been confirmed in the municipality since the beginning of the tragedy.

In total, the state government confirms 107 deaths, in addition to 134 missing and 754 injured.
