In 5 months, bakery sector revenue exceeds 2021 results

The bakery and confectionery sector recorded revenues of BRL 109.86 billion from January to May 2022. The amount achieved in the first five months of this year is already greater than the amount accumulated in the entire year of 2021, of BRL 105 billion. Own production alone represents around 70% of total revenue.

In addition, the flow of customers increased by 5.25% in the national average and the number of sales grew by 3.6%. The data released this Friday (12) are from a survey by the Institute for the Development of Food Companies (Ideal).

The survey also shows that the number of sales grew by 3.6% — from 15.90% in 2021 to 19.50% in the first five months of 2022.

Impact on prices

The institute’s survey assesses the impact of inflation on the sector’s prices. According to the survey, from 2020 to May 2022, the price of wheat flour (50 kg) increased by 56.9% (from R$ 140.72 to R$ 220.76). The increase is even greater compared to 2019, 85.1%.

On the other hand, the data show that the price of a kilo of French bread did not increase to the same extent: 28.3% (R$ 12.99 to R$ 16.67), from November 2020 to March 2022. The comparative variation to 2019 is 37.1%.

The institute assesses that the rise in wheat flour negatively impacted the profitability of the sale of French bread in Brazil in the order of 55%.

The projection is that the loss in profitability in the bakery sector will be approximately R$ 7.93 billion per year.

In addition, the data show that, in the analysis from January to May and without discounting inflation, the bakery and confectionery sector had a nominal growth of 19.5%.
