In 5 years, losses caused by rains were R$ 55.5 billion, says CNM

A survey by the National Confederation of Municipalities (CNM) analyzed the disasters caused by rains in Brazil between October 2017 and January 2022. In these five years, the losses recorded by the Civil Defense exceeded R$ 55.5 billion.

There were also 5,622 emergency decrees, with 1,302 in the rainy season from 2021 to January this year alone.

Minas Gerais and Bahia are the states most affected by the rains, with the greatest losses.

In an interview with CNN Rádio, the president of CNM, Paulo Ziulkoski, also highlighted that 549,166 homes were damaged in some way, with 15,968 totally destroyed.

Ziulkoski claimed that the government “has no recourse and the collection bursts in the municipality”.

There are 61,786 homeless this year alone, one month away from the end of the rainy season.

According to Ziulkoski, the solution is to implement a “structuring prevention policy”: “It is not a thing of the moment, there is no way to escape from a national policy, some say that mayors want to get rid of responsibility, but from the 100 reais paid in taxes , 70 go to the Federal Government.”
