In the last nine years, on one of the main expressways in Rio de Janeiro, Avenida Brasil, more than 3 thousand accidents with victims were recorded. According to CET-Rio, although the average waiting time for help in emergency situations is seven minutes, 3.4% of incidents result in deaths due to collisions.
According to information from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Brasil is the largest expressway in length in the city and also in the country. 58 kilometers long, it passes through 27 neighborhoods in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. Between 2015 and 2024, however, according to the city hall, there were more than 15 thousand occurrences. In addition, 236 vehicles were set on fire. Numbers that worry.
With the aim of improving traffic flow, reducing congestion and accidents, from this Saturday (30th) onwards, in addition to the TransBrasil BRT Corridor, the expressway's new Integrated Control and Emergency System will come into operation.
With this, Brasil will gain new equipment, signage, in addition to an increase in the workforce. From the Rio Operations Center (COR), several municipal bodies, such as CET-Rio, Mobi-Rio, Conservation Secretariat, Comlurb, Public Order Secretariat (Seop) and Municipal Guard, will work together.
“Operations Center will have specific coordination for Avenida Brasil. We are implementing several cameras on Avenida Brasil, totaling 186 cameras. The stretch between Terminal Deodoro and Terminal Gentileza will be completely monitored by video, municipal guards will be able to impose any type of fine using the cameras”, explained COR's chief executive, Marcus Belchior.
According to the new operation, CET-Rio will also have the reinforcement of teams and trailers at its two operational bases on Avenida Brasil in the north zone: one located in Benfica, and the other in Irajá, at Trevo das Margaridas. , which was installed in anticipation of the increase in demands with the end of the works and allowing for a better distribution of resources and optimization of team movements along the entire road.
The operation will now have 35 traffic operators, 18 motorcycles, nine operational vehicles and a munck truck. 16 trailers will also be available to quickly clear the road in case of any need. By July, there will be an increase in both equipment, such as the total use of 25 trailers and 29 motorcycles, and the workforce.
The trailers will be distributed along the road in strategic positions, close to the points where the highest number of occurrences are recorded based on data from services carried out, which will allow for optimization of the travel time of these vehicles.
Monitoring actions will be intensified through patrols of motorcyclists and pickup trucks, allowing rapid identification of any occurrence that may interfere with traffic flow and immediate activation of the necessary resources, such as trailers, for example.
Another measure is the installation of extensive vertical and horizontal signage, such as painting the lanes and installation of signs, segregators and pictograms, with the aim of guiding drivers as to which vehicles are authorized to travel on the rigid pavement (concrete), the limits of speed on each stretch, and all the information necessary to guide drivers. Banners and variable message panels will also reinforce communication informing about road changes.
