In a debate with CNN, Barros defends capitalization of Eletrobras; boulos criticizes

In a debate held by CNN this Wednesday (15), the federal deputy and leader of the Government in the Chamber, Ricardo Barros (PP-PR), defended the capitalization of Eletrobras, while the national coordinator of the MTST (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Ceto) and pre-candidate for Federal deputy for São Paulo, Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), classified the impact of the change as “disastrous”.

“The purpose of Eletrobras’ capitalization is precisely this: to open the company to corporate management; increase investments; reduce the price of energy; allow it to behave as a major global player in renewable energies, which are currently receiving many investments”, argued Barros.

Boulos disagreed with the government leader in the Chamber. In his assessment, the “impact of this is disastrous. First disastrous for sovereignty. No self-respecting country gives up its water and energy sovereignty. Brazil did. Second, it is disastrous for the consumer.”

Eletrobras concluded its privatization process and started offering shares on the Stock Exchange last Monday (15th). Since then, the government has ceased to be the controlling shareholder of the company, with 72.2% of the share capital, and now holds 45%.

“When a State gives up a fundamental resource, such as energy generation, such as control over its hydroelectric plants, it is the Brazilian people who lose. Because what is going to happen, from now on, in the 15 hydroelectric plants that belong to Eletrobras, there will be a discount, that is, the price of energy will be sold at market value”, pointed out Boulos.

Barros, on the other hand, valued the process. “The government continues to hold 45% of the shares and, therefore, will benefit from the appreciation of these shares in the market, from the optimization, from the efficiency of the company, which should now become more agile, with an investment capacity free from the spending ceiling of the federal government.”
