In a rare interview, Kate Moss talks about Depp and the “painful” side of being a model

the british supermodel Kate Moss revealed some past pitfalls of her modeling career in a rare interview with the BBC podcast series “Desert Island Discs”.

Moss, who told T Magazine in 2010 that she “just hates” talking to the media — and that as a young model she “used to get really sick just worrying” about the interviews she did — opened up to presenter Lauren Laverne about experiences “painful” experiences in the industry.

The iconic recordings that helped define his career were often “difficult and painful” behind the scenes, according to Moss. While shooting the 1992 Calvin Klein underwear campaign alongside Mark Wahlberg for example, Moss told Laverne that she felt “vulnerable and scared.”

“(Wahlberg) was very macho and it was all about him, he had a big entourage,” Moss said. “They played on my vulnerability,” she added of those in positions of power in the industry. “I was very young and innocent.”

And Moss — who was scouted by a top modeling agent at 14 and started running editorials at 16 — also spoke of other cases where her youth was used against her.

The Brit said photographers “pressured” her to show more skin than she was comfortable with – including being photographed topless.

As the face of the infamous 1990s fashion trend “heroine chic”, Moss said she felt she often became “the scapegoat for a lot of people’s problems”.

“I’ve never been anorexic, I’ve never been… I’ve never used heroin,” she said. “I was skinny because I wasn’t fed on filming or shows, and I’ve always been skinny.”

In 2005, when a British tabloid published pictures of Moss appearing to be using cocaine, Moss told Laverne that she “felt sick and was very angry.”

She later released a statement in which she apologized, “to all the people I have let down because of my behavior, which has reflected poorly on my family, friends, co-workers, business partners and others.”

“I take full responsibility for my actions,” the statement read. “I also accept that there are a number of personal issues that I need to resolve, and I have begun to take difficult but necessary steps to resolve them.”

Since officially retiring from the catwalk in 2004, Kate Moss has set up her own modeling agency, whose books now include her daughter, the rising star. Lila Moss – already with a cover of British Vogue under his belt.

Alongside his participation in June Fashion Week, Moss made headlines for resurrecting a piece of fashion history – a vintage 1993 John Galliano Union Jack blazer – at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in London.

This month, she was named creative director of Diet Coke, a role previously held by fashion titans Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs.

In his fierce defense of controversial figures like Galliano – who was found guilty of making anti-Semitic remarks in a Parisian cafe in 2011 – Moss affirmed his belief in “justice and justice”.

“I know that John Galliano is not a bad person,” she said. “People are not themselves when they drink and say things they would never say if they were sober.”

Moss also spoke to Laverne about her role in the Johnny Depp libel trial, having made waves for her Zoom testimony in May. At trial, Amber Heard testified that she heard a “vague rumor” alleging that Depp pushed Moss into a fight during their relationship in the mid-1990s.

Depp then called Moss as a rebuttal witness. “I know he never kicked me down the stairs. I had to tell the truth,” she told Laverne.
