In a speech, Maduro behaves as if Venezuela were already part of the BRICS

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro spoke this Thursday (24) at the expanded session of the BRICS Summit, held in Kazan, Russia. During his speech, the Bolivarian leader praised the model adopted by the bloc and behaved as if Venezuela were part of the coalition of emerging countries.

“Venezuela is part of this Brics family. And I am grateful for the invitation because it was the first time that a Venezuelan president participated in a BRICS Summit with this characteristic”, said Maduro.

The speech contrasts with the reality presented at this year’s summit.

Venezuela is not in the group of 13 countries that should be invited to join the bloc. The absence of Caracas is the result of an articulation of Brazilian diplomacy, which appealed to the principle of consensuality to block the nomination.

Even so, in his speech this Thursday, Maduro echoed several arguments adopted by Brazil in international forums — including a direct reference to Chancellor Mauro Vieira.

Among the convergences is the criticism of Israel’s war against Hamas. According to Maduro, the international community needs to ensure that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is held responsible for the civilian victims in the Palestinian enclave.

According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, controlled by Hamas, in just over a year of occupation, more than 42,000 Palestinians died.

“Every time a precision missile hits a residential building in Gaza or southern Lebanon, killing men, women and children, these are missiles that set the United Nations system on fire. Where is the International Court of Justice? Where is the United Nations justice system? And the lives of children in Palestine have no value?” asked Maduro.

The Venezuelan president also reinforced the need to reform the international community’s governance system — even paying public praise to the Brazilian chancellor, Mauro Vieira.

Earlier, also in the expanded session, Vieira resumed the commitment suggested by President Lula during the UN General Assembly in New York to convene a constituent assembly to reformulate the United Nations Charter.

Maduro also defended the construction of an international payments system that is independent of Swift, which currently controls transactions.

The measure is a priority for countries that suffer from sanctions approved by the UN Security Council or unilateral punishments imposed by European countries or the United States.

This is the case of Caracas and the host of this year’s BRICS Summit, Russia.

“Venezuela was removed from all global payment systems as if it were an economic punishment for issues of political change that we are all aware of. It is really important to have a combination of the strong currencies of the superpowers and also the right for each of us to have currencies from our own countries.”
