Ecuador's attorney general said this Wednesday (3) that 14 people were arrested in an investigation into organized crime in the South American country.
Those arrested include judges, lawyers and police officers accused of helping dangerous criminals go free through legal maneuvers, the attorney general's office said.
Some of those detained have already been charged in the so-called “Metástase” corruption and organized crime investigation, which saw judicial officials and others detained last March and December.
Ecuador is facing huge spikes in violence blamed by authorities on drug trafficking gangs. President Daniel Noboa, who took office in November, has declared 22 groups terrorists and said the country is at war.
Noboa extended the state of emergency last month, allowing the military to participate in anti-crime efforts. The measure will expire on April 8.
The attorney general's office typically does not release the full names of those arrested or charged.
