In a joint statement released this Friday (14th) after the meeting between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazil reiterates that it considers Taiwan an “inseparable part of Chinese territory”.
“The Brazilian side reiterated that it firmly adheres to the one-China principle, and that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legal government representing the whole of China, while Taiwan is an inseparable part of the Chinese territory. By reaffirming the principle of territorial integrity of states, it supported the peaceful development of relations across the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese side expressed great appreciation in this regard,” the document reads.
The meeting between Lula and Xi Jinping takes place a few days after the end of Chinese military exercises around the island of Taiwan. Beijing launched the drills on Saturday, the day after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen returned from a 10-day visit to Central America and the United States, where she met with Speaker of the US House Kevin McCarthy.
Taiwan and China have been governed separately since the end of a civil war more than seven decades ago, in which defeated nationalists fled to Taipei, the island’s capital.
Taiwan transitioned from an authoritarian government to a democracy in the 1990s.
However, the Communist Party of China claims the autonomous island as its territory, and in recent years, as its power has grown, Chinese leader Xi Jinping has made clear his ambitions to “reunify” the island – by force if necessary. .
As tensions between the US and China escalated over the conflict over Taiwan, President Joe Biden said the US would defend the island militarily if China attacked.
