In Amazonas singer of Boi Caprichoso reports aggression and religious intolerance

In a video released on social media, singer Mara Lima, from Boi Caprichoso, shared an account of aggression and religious intolerance she suffered on Wednesday night (17). According to Mara, a man attacked her with a car key and punched her simply because she was wearing a boi-bumbá shirt.

Mara reported that the attacker uttered words filled with religious intolerance during the attack: “Take off that shirt. It only brings misfortune. Devil shirt. The ox belongs to the devil. The ox belongs to the enemy. I carry the devil with me and it is rebuked in the name of Jesus.”

Still in the recording, Mara showed the injuries caused by the attacker on her face and chin. He was detained by the Military Police, according to the singer.

The case soon gained repercussions. Several artists and fans published messages of strength to the artist. The ox-bumbá Caprichoso expressed support and solidarity and in a note also vehemently repudiated the crime of religious intolerance committed against Mara Lima.

The Secretary of Culture and Creative Economy of Amazonas, Marcos Apólo, also issued a note: “The ox is one of the great artistic and cultural expressions of our state, a source of income for thousands of workers. We regret what happened and reinforce our repudiation of any and all acts of intolerance.”
