In an open letter, Ukraine’s first lady condemns the killing of children in the war

Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska posted an open letter on her Facebook page on Tuesday reflecting on what has happened to Ukraine in the past two weeks since the Russian invasion.

“Despite assurances from Kremlin-backed propaganda outlets that they call this a ‘special operation’ — it is, in fact, the mass murder of Ukrainian civilians,” Zelenska said.

In the long and sentimental letter, she added: “Perhaps the most terrifying and devastating of this invasion are the child victims. Eight-year-old Alice, who died on the streets of Okhtyrka as her grandfather tried to protect her. Or Polina from Kiev, who died in the bombing with her parents. 14-year-old Arseniy was hit on the head by debris and could not be saved as an ambulance was unable to arrive in time because of the intense fires.”

“The first newborns of the war saw the concrete ceiling of the basement and took their first breath in the underground air, and were greeted by a trapped and terrified community. At this point, there are several dozen children who don’t know what it’s like to have peace in their lives,” she wrote.

The Ukrainian first lady also discussed the challenges of getting essential medical care, as well as the rising tide of refugees.

She said Russian President Vladimir Putin underestimated the resistance of Ukrainians.

“While Kremlin propagandists boasted that Ukrainians would welcome them with flowers as saviors, they were shunned with Molotov cocktails,” she wrote.

Zelenska also thanked people around the world for supporting her country.

And she echoed her husband’s demands for a no-fly zone over Ukraine. “Close the sky and we ourselves will administer the war on the ground,” she said.

She concluded: “I witness and tell the world: the war in Ukraine is not a war ‘somewhere out there’. This is a war in Europe, close to the borders of the European Union. Ukraine is stopping the force that can aggressively enter its cities tomorrow under the guise of saving civilians.”

“If we don’t stop Putin, who threatens to start a nuclear war, there will be no safe place in the world for any of us,” concluded the Ukrainian first lady.
