President Lula met with the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, in Puglia, Italy, at the end of the summit of the seven largest world powers and the European Union, the G7. Lula participated in the event as a guest of the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, the host.
During the meeting, Olaf Scholz expressed solidarity with the people of Brazil due to the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, which have left more than 170 people dead since the beginning of May.
The two leaders also talked about the political situation in Europe, following the advance of the extreme right in the European Union, and in Latin America. The two also addressed the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, one of the main agendas of this year’s G7 meeting.
President Lula also talked about the G20, inviting Germany to the Global Alliance against Hunger initiative and Brazil’s other initiatives and priorities such as the reform of global governance institutions. Brazil is in the rotating presidency of the group of 20 largest powers this year.
Lula and Scholz talked about the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union and the World Trade Organization.
