According to the study carried out in 15 countries, including Brazil, 9 out of 10 people globally agree that representation in television and movies has an impact on the world and influences the perception we have of certain groups or people.
Also according to the survey, 52% of the people who participated in the survey say they feel underrepresented, saying that there is a lack of precision in how the group they belong to is portrayed in the audiovisual – that is, as much as the movies and series are improving in the area. include different people in the screens, the representation of different groups is not done reliably.
The impact of this misrepresentation is felt detrimentally by the public. According to the study, 18% of black people worldwide feel they are portrayed as criminals and 16% feel they are portrayed as dangerous.
In Brazil, this percentage is even higher: 23% of black people feel they are portrayed as criminals and 24% as dangerous. Middle Eastern and Arab people also said in the survey that they felt represented as criminals (20%) and dangerous (17%).
Poor representation in the audiovisual is also pointed out by people with disabilities and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. According to the survey, nearly 40% of people with physical disabilities say they don’t see people with bodies like theirs on movie screens or on television.
The study also showed that misrepresentation on screens has an impact on the mental health of the audience: among those who feel underrepresented, 41% say their self-esteem and confidence are impacted and nearly 60% say it makes them feel unimportant, ignored. or disappointed.
