The Minister of Finance, Christos Staikouras, is going to Brussels tomorrow, in order to participate in the meetings of the Eurogroup and Ecofin.
Tomorrow at noon, the Minister will have a private meeting with the President of the Eurogroup, Pascal Donahue, and then will participate in the Eurogroup meeting, where, among other things, the 12th Evaluation Report of the European Institutions for Greece will be discussed, which was completed. successfully about two weeks ago.
The eurozone finance ministers will also discuss the post-program supervision reports of Portugal, Cyprus, Spain and Ireland, the conclusions of the IMF report on the eurozone under Article 4, and the European Commission proposal on the recommendations for the economic policy of the euro area in 2022. It is also planned to examine the economic and budgetary situation of the euro area, on the basis of the draft budgets submitted by the member states for the next year. In addition, the Eurogroup work program for the first half of 2022 will be agreed.
After the meeting, the ministers will have the opportunity to take a special family photo, in view of the completion – on 1 January 2022 – of 20 years since the circulation of euro banknotes and coins. A dinner will be given by the President of the Eurogroup to the Ministers of Finance, in view of the forthcoming European Council and the new year.
The day after tomorrow, Mr. Staikouras will participate in the Ecofin meeting. In this, according to the agenda, the European Union finance ministers will be invited to adopt a general approach to updating the rules for reduced VAT rates, will be informed about the progress on the legislative package to adapt to the goal of reducing emissions of at least 55% by 2030 (“Fit for 55”) on measures to strengthen the banking union and combat money laundering. At the same time, they will hold a first exchange of views on the legislative package for the Union of Capital Markets, which will be presented by the European Commission. Finally, the recent autumn package presented by the European Commission in the context of the European Semester will be discussed.
