The Zhejiang Provincial Administration has announced the start of an investigation into mining cases in government organizations, public higher education institutions and scientific institutions.
To track mining, computer security experts used a system to analyze network traffic from the IP addresses of government organizations in the province. 184 IP addresses were found, from which there was an exchange with mining pools. The addresses belonged to 77 institutions.
Checks have confirmed the presence of mining farms in more than 20 organizations. The management of the institutions was ordered to stop illegal mining. In addition, employees who were found responsible for the mining of cryptocurrencies were subjected to separate punishments. It is reported that in most cases we are talking about the placement of mining farms based on video cards, and not specialized ASIC miners. Typically, such farms are used to mine ETH and other cryptocurrencies based on the Ethash algorithm.
It is worth noting that there is a noticeable shortage of electricity in Zhejiang province, so the desire of the authorities to detect and stop illegal mining is quite understandable.
Recall that in China, a ban has been imposed on the mining of cryptocurrencies. The United States is now the leader in hashrate on the Bitcoin network, generating 35.4% of the total network hashrate. Kazakhstan and Russia are in second and third places, respectively.
