President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) called Russia president Vladimir Putin, and encouraged him to attend a negotiating meeting with Ukraine scheduled for Thursday (15) in Istanbul, Turkey.
The call took place on the afternoon of Wednesday (14), according to the Brazilian government. Also according to Planalto, Lula “congratulated” Putin “for the proposal to open negotiation with Ukraine for Peace”.
The head of state also emphasized Brazil’s commitment to peace and was available to collaborate in the search for agreement between countries.
Putin said last Saturday that Russia is ready for direct conversations with Ukraine. The Russian government said it will send a delegation to the meeting on Thursday, but did not disclose who will be present.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pointed out that he is ready for a face to face with Putin, but appealed for a ceasefire to provide the “diplomatic foundations.”
Ukraine Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha even asked the Brazilian chancellor, Mauro Vieira, who would help Putin convince the negotiation.
