In contest, Senate chooses students to live parliamentary routine for four days

A student from each unit of the federation will have the opportunity to experience the daily life of a senator between June 27 and July 1, through the Young Senator 2022 program.

The 27 students will travel to Brasília, where they will go through the processes of discussion and drafting of law suggestions. Student proposals can even become bills.

They were selected for their performance in an essay with the theme “200 years of Independence: lessons from history for building tomorrow”.

The program’s objective is to provide high school students from public schools with knowledge about the structure and functioning of the Legislative Power in Brazil and to encourage young people’s relationship with the Federal Senate.

Of the 27 students chosen, most are women – there are 19 students and 8 students. The representative of the State of Rio de Janeiro is the youngest among those selected. Renata Gonçalves, 14 years old, studies at Colégio Estadual Elvidio Costa, in São Fidélis, in the North of Fluminense. The maximum age to participate in the program is 19 years old.

The student from Rio de Janeiro says she feels privileged to be able to represent the school, the city and the state in the Senate.

“I received a lot of support from the direction and pedagogical guidance of my school and, mainly, from my Portuguese language teacher. In addition to guiding me in the production of the text, she gave me all the emotional support”, says the student.

The work of young people in Brasília simulates the work of senators of the Republic: it begins with the inauguration and election of the Bureau (president, vice president and secretaries) and ends with the approval of projects and publication in the Diário do Senado Federal.

The accepted suggestions are forwarded to the House’s Commission on Human Rights and Participatory Legislation (CDH).

Since the beginning of the program, in 2010, young people have already presented 54 proposals to the collegiate. Of these, 40 were accepted and began to be processed as bills and two followed as Proposed Amendments to the Constitution (PECs).
